“...providing help - creating hope…”

Project youth Haven is located a 212 Slater Street in Paterson, New Jersey.  The Program provides residential and crisis counseling services for runaway, homeless and abused youth, ages 11 to 17, and their families.  Open in 1974, Youth Haven has emerged as a program dedicated to helping youth in crisis through counseling, temporary shelter, case management, outreach, advocacy, assistance in locating positive placement, and aftercare follow-up.

At its inception Project Youth Haven provided short-term residential services to a maximum of six youths at a time.  This capacity continued from 1974 to 1985.  In July 1985, the program’s services where expanded to make it capable of serving twelve youth residentially at a time.  The maximum length of stay is 45 days for the emergency component and six months for the group home residential care.  Over its twenty-three year history, Project Youth Haven has served more than 5.700 clients, both residentially and on an out-client basis.

Project Youth Haven’s goal is to reunite youth and families and to promote family stability.  The family is encouraged to work with the youth in the resolution of the crisis situation and continued counseling is encouraged after the youth leaves the program.  When reunification is not feasible, the program helps prepare the youth for alternative living arrangements.

Project Youth Haven is staffed by at least two trained counselors at all times.  All the staff members contribute toward readjusting the youth'’ behavior and assisting them to solve the problems that cause their homelessness.    The staff provides direct services to youth in residence.

Youth Haven is funded by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services, and by the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Youth and Family Services, and donations.  No parental fees are required.  The program utilizes supplemental counseling and medical community resources.
