The senior and Handicapped Program, located at 435 Main Street in Paterson, New Jersey has been in existence since 1976. The service was originally targeted for senior citizen, but in 1984 was expanded to include the disabled. A free service, the program provides safe, efficient and cost effective transportation to elderly and disabled residents of Paterson year-round. Transportation services provided to people who have no transportation of their own, or who find public transportation inaccessible include: medical appointments (through Passaic, Bergen and Essex counties), senior and handicapped shopping services, transportation to nutrition sites, adult day care for the elderly, cultural and special events, employment/educational services for the elderly and disabled. The program operates a motor pool of 12 vehicles, and provides service to approximately 5,900 clients per month. It currently has a staff of 10 full time employees and 1 volunteer. Clients are referred through a number of community resources which include: Passaic County Para-Transit Unit, Paterson Office of the Aging and Handicapped, D.I.A.L., Paterson Aging and Disabled Services and local Hospitals. Sources of funding include: New Jersey Casino Revenue Fund, the City of Paterson, and in-kind services from the Father English Multi-Purpose Community Center. |
